House of the Dragon production designer explains how they created the ancient Valyria model

penultimate episode of Dragon HouseSeason 1 is dropping tonight, and a new era will begin now that King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) has passed away. During his time on the series, Viserys wasn’t as fierce as most of his family nor was he a dragon rider like his brother and daughter. However, he had a hobby of his own. The character is often seen playing with his impressive archetype in ancient Valyria. In a new behind-the-scenes video, some of the people who worked on the show talked about creating the model, which is made up of more than 200 separate small buildings. It was revealed that many of the pieces in the model were 3D-printed over a two-month period. In fact, building one took at least 24 hours to be printed while some of the smaller pieces were hand-carved.

“Viserys isn’t into riding a dragon, he’s seeking more thought,” Executive Producer Ryan J. Condall explains. “The idea is that he went back to all the old texts and maps, and painstakingly reworked them.” “It’s a little hobby to run to there,” Considine adds. Production designer Jim Clay continues to explain how to craft the model. He said, “We got attached to pumice stone, which is a softer volcanic stone and is associated with Dragonstone and Dragonmont and the volcanic nature of that island.”

“It’s an integral part of our story,” added former model Miguel Saposhnik. “Although Viserys is largely a progressive Targaryen, he longs for ancient Valyria, somehow searching to make sense of something he cannot fully comprehend.” You can watch the video below:

Is Viserys Targaryen a good king?

Considine recently said “I’m fine” ComicBook.com of his character. “I’m just kidding. I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s cool, if it’s greatness. Well, I guess there’s a little bit of both, really.” He added, “He’s definitely not a Destructive King, that’s for sure. He’s a compassionate King. That’s a rarity in this kingdom we know.”

“He takes his place in history very seriously,” Considine explained. “The only thing that spoils Viserys is…in the end, he didn’t have the right mood to be a king, you know, the duties and what that meant and cater to everyone. He is seen as weak because he doesn’t go to war. But he is a kind man. And in the end, Compassion spoils him, I guess, which I think is even more tragic.”
